AI video link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMmvlit2uZM

Start, Stop, Continue

Start:

- I think that I should start assimilating into the crowd more. These would include pretending to be an audience member, and I feel as though this would be effective because it would make the audience feel as though I am just one of them.

-Another thing I want to start doing is make an interactive presentation. This could have been getting AI alerts on the screen as part of my Prezi to show the effectiveness of that app. This would go well with the presentation since it is silly but at the same time shows how well the app can actually work.

-One think I should start doing is take a muscle relaxer before a presentation to see if I calm down more. When up there I feel as though I come off as agitated. Sometimes it works to my advantage and shows me too passionate about what I’m taking about but I feel as though I trip up to much because of it.

-Lastly what I want to start doing is wearing company shirts, I watched more shark tank and realized a lot of the time they are wearing a $5 T- Shirt that represents their company.

Stop:

-I really would like to stop editing till the last minute. Although the video exceeded my own expectation and was liked more than I imagined, I felt stressed because I kept going back and changing things in the video, kept editing. Maybe if I started the edit earlier I wouldn’t have been so stressed out.

-I need to stop leaving during everyone’s presentation. I’m worried that people take offense to that, even though when I leave it’s to sooth my nerves. Often I leave and use the restrooms, go out and vape or walk around to shake my nervousness.

-Another think I want to stop doing would have to be fiddling with my fucking hands the whole dam presentation. I try to play it off as though I am lost in thought but you know after looking at it shows I am stressing about something. I wouldn’t want to listen to someone super stressed out and neither does anyone else.

-Lastly what I would like to stop doing is staying up at night working on all aspects of the presentation. I was exaughsted by the time it was my groups turn to present and I felt at some levels it really showed in the way I presented in regards to posture and stance. I even had dark circles under my eyes.

Continue:

I want to continue to make videos for my presentation. All around I got compliments on the humor and editing of the video and felt that it showed the product idea and also it grabbed the attention of the audience.

I want to continue to practice acting because I feel as though public speaking is a form of acting. You take on a persona to represent an idea and you just go for it.

I want to continue tp dress up for presentations for it just gives a good video and it makes the audience view you as important.

I want to continue to push the idea of society because when you break norms it cause people to focus their attention to the norm that has been broken.

I want to continue to identify conventions of a genre since it helps me break it down and understand it. For this project, breaking down the convention of Shark Tank (the genre) really helped me structure both the video and presentation itself.

Moves of other groups:

The dump group killed it with the PTA meeting. All of the different kind of parents portrayed can be seen in any Carpinteria PTA meeting and I really enjoyed watching the present. Also McCool took on the role as a concerned mother well and executed it well.

TarOff was another successful group. They defintley addressed the problem and it was informative. The scary video that mocked horror movie trailers was a good idea and the tar genie was very funny.

The CEO of Trax was very convincning and that opening video was fucking savage. I felt bad because it felt like a kid was missing in the back of some weirdo’s van and I don’t like weirdos. Over all it was a good presentation but a controversial idea.

Moves:

The dropping of the picture frame – powerful

The PTA parents- funny but informative

Tar genie and the hotel owner – funny and illustrated the idea well

Rough Sketch of Epicness

So we are doing a shark tank like presentation for a product AI: the smart dating service. The concept is simple. We will start with a mock shark tank video explaining the sharks, give a testimony of the service itself and finally the entrance of the two entrepreneurs. Once in the class room Kyle and I will give our pitch to the sharks where we battle the sharks and the sharks battle each other. After throwing some numbers at each other for about ten minutes, we will then conclude our presentation and come up with a reasonable deal.

We need:
The testimony – Jake
Script- Canyon and Taka
Prezi- Kyle

Moves I Liked

Taka: One move Take used that was useful to his presentation was he used a real life scenario/ story of a friend, which brought the audience that much closer to him, his self disclosure was a great move.
Nick: The universe is vast and forever expanding. He used humanity greatest fear; not knowing, and made a speech on it. This move was very smart since it caused me to be uneasy about not knowing what's really out there.
Canyon: He uses a lot of different moves to grab an audience's attention. His best move is the way in which he speaks. He uses pauses, but more importantly he uses some humor. He treats the opposing views of his ideas as light, and jokes around about how serious they actually are, which reinforces his own. It was very nicely played.

Speech 3

Planning: I thought about things that people cared about. Dogs were one of them, I was watching a in the arms of the angels commercial, that was followed by a wounded warriors project commercial. My friend change the channel at the second commercial, and I bothered me once I realized that the majority of people care more about abused animals rather than neglected human beings.

Stop:
-For my speech I tried to evoke emotion since I felt a successful radical idea must spark something in peoples bellies. However, not all of the thing I did were good for this idea. One example of this would be the torn up dog pictures, it just doesn't really help the idea I'm trying to convey to my audience.
- I want to stop getting myself into a lot of out of class drama right before my speech. IT made the last speech I  gave very challenging since it was hard to focus on anything but my crashed car, no job and living situation.
- I need to stop not dressing up. The first couple of speeches I tried to look presentable but the last I didn't really put a lot of effort into. This is an issue because I felt as though people took me less seriously.
-I want to stop looking around the room when I'm talking to my audience, but rather look  them in the eyes. Politicians do this, and some of the most famous politicians of all time had very radical ideas.
Start:
-In the video my voice sounds hoarse, raspy and dry. Now while this is a cool effect in movies, here it sounds like I am dying from no water. I can remember before I went up on stage that I was very thirsty, and that I was about to go get water but was called up and was out of time. From now on I need to bring water to class with me for my speeches.
-I need to start going to the gym again before my speech. In my first two speeches I felt as though I was tired because I worked out before. However, this last speech I did not work out before hand, and I just felt groggy.
-After watching my video I realized that I don't move aloud the room as much as I could. If I were to do this I would be able to convey my message to more people in the room, not just the ones in front of my presentation. Also, this would give me the illusion of power in the room, as if I were Zack or any pother kind of teacher.
-The whole class uses prezi, I think I should start using it to so that presentations go that much smoother, plus prezi has a professional look to it.
-I think I should invest in a better phone so that I can film the speech myself and not have to worry about other doing it for me, this would make me feel better I think.
Continue:
-A lot of my classmates liked my speech because of the emotion I brought with it. I need to continue to use my anger and frustrations and guide them into my speeches to create a passionate and intense environment for my speech.
-I must continue to evoke emotion in my speech. I noticed that my pictures hit people below the belt, which is exactly what I was trying to do.
-I should always pick serious topics from now on. I felt as though my el chap speech and my last speech had to many jokes or laughable ideas, but when I am serious, it is much better.
-Before this speech I left class to go to the bathroom. While walking to the bathroom I was listening to music to help calm me down, and it did. I would say that my last spe4ech was the best speech so far, so I should try to replicate it and I felt that the music was definetly a positive influence.
-I want to continue to meditate throughout the day so that on the time that my presentation arises I can make sure that I am calm, focused and ready to give the speech I need to give.
-I want to continue to make a over generalized planning sheet so that I have a basic idea of what I want to do, but at the same time I want to make sure that I have freedom to change it to make it exactly how I want it from a creative point of view.

Motivation Post Speech

Here is a link to my new speech, speech #2.

Overall I felt a lot better about my second speech since I knew what to improve on, look for and continue to do. However, there is still a lot of room for improvement such as but not limited to the following.

Continue:
·         I have a stage presence when I am up in front of the class. This allows me to be comfortable and easy going so I don’t get to nervous.
·         I want to continue my confidence vibe that I give off for it makes my presentation seem more important.
·         I really liked how in my power point I used funny pictures to engage the class.
·         I want to continue to dress up since it will help me look much more important as it did the day of the speech.
·         I want to continue to use the hand gestures I used since they helped me engage with the audience.
·         I want to keep doing having jokes in my presentation so that I can continue to engage my audience.
·         I want to continue to wear green ties since green is a good color on me.
·         I want to continue to point out minute details that affect how other might perceive one another so that it shows how carefully I have thought about the topic.
·          I want to continue to make more acronyms such as AMEND, because a lot of people really liked my acronym.
Stops:
·         I really need to stop using filler words such as um or like since this detracts from what I’m saying. It makes the audience believe that I do not know what I’m talking about since I’m struggling on what I’m going to say next.
·         I need to stop playing with my wrist for that is a dead giveaway when I am trying to think about what I’m saying and what I’m going to say next.
·         I want to stop looking around the class to see how people are receiving my message for my message is good from the start and focusing on the nonverbal feedback isn’t going to help my effectively execute what I am trying to execute.
·         I need to stop hitting the gym right before class because I am all tired for the dam speech and I can’t focus on what I’m saying because my calves hurt.
·         I need to stop worrying about my visual presentation all night and just get some sleep, because I look tired in the video.
·         I need to stop researching so many topics with in my subject and narrow it down to just one simple one.
Start:
·         I need to start shining my shoes when I dress up for presentation since shiny shoes correlates to power and success
·         I should star rehearsing my presentation in front of people a week before my speech is live so that it flows better.
·         I should rehearse my speech in front of a mirror so that I can see what I look like when I give this speech. Apparently a lot of psychopaths do this so that they can immolate certain micro expressions which in return makes them a better liar. I don’t plan to lie, but acting up on a stage is sort of like lying, so maybe in that sense then yeah.
·         I should start bringing my own camera device so that I can upload the video without having to rely on Daniel, even though he always pulls through.
·         I need to start focusing my research on one main topic so that I have very specific details and empirical data on that and that alone.
·         I need to pay close attention to how much time my speech is and practice it so that I am sure when I need to move on from a slide and when to draw out a slide.
·         I want to start making something little that I can pass out to the class so that they feel obligated to care about whatever it is I am saying.
·         I need to start focusing on easy to understand punch line oriented jokes. I was thinking possibly jokes that play on words, or possibly jokes that are already existing that I can tweak so that it is specific to the subject.
·         Another thing I should start doing is asking the audience question, rhetorical or not, so that they feel another connection between us and will focus in more.
·         I should start treating the speeches more like a one way conversation than a public speaking event, so that it remains personal.
·         I should start changing pitch and tempo throughout the speech so that I capture more attention from the audience.

I also did many moves in my speech. Some of the moves that I did were:
·         Waving my hands slowly back and forth as though I was holding a paint brush, trying to paint the audience a picture with what I was saying.
·         The second move that I did that I though was great would be when I changed slides and slammed the space bar so that it would be even more apparent that I changed slides and ideas.
·         Lastly, I clasped together my hands onto my wrist, which was a bad move that made me look nervous.
Other moves that other people did that were apparent were:
·         Taka emulating the moves shown in pictures on his slide in real life.
·         Connor slamming the notebook down on the table and raising his voice to grab attention.

·         Daniel’s over all enthusiasm to his speech.

Jacob Saenz, Speech 1 review, type 1 thinking.

Stop:
·         I need to stop forgetting lines or saying lines in incorrect order. I know that my speech would have flowed better if I had said what was on the paper.
·         I need to stop waiting till before class time to practice my speech aloud. I read my speech constantly leading up to the performance but that ended up not being best.
·         I need to stop looking people directly in the eye when I’m talking up front so that I don’t lose track of what I’m saying.
·         I need to stop talking in loops and just remember my lines.
·         I need to stop standing so dam still, I should move about the room more although in this particular performance I was in an elevator, a confined space.
·         I need to stop dressing casually and dress a bit nicer that way I look more suave and professional.
·         I need to stop relying on others and invest in my own camera so I can properly post the video of my speech to my blog.
·         I really should stop working out directly before class because it fatigues me and I felt rather tired during my speech.
·         I need to stop skipping entire section of my speech because that I really detracting from the main idea.
·         I really need to stop looking at the ground or my shoes when I’m thinking because it definitely shows I don’t know what I’m going to say next.
·         I find that In my speech I am tripping on my words because I’m not %100 on what I’m going to say next so I should work on that.
·         I also need to stop adding stuff in there that shouldn’t be in there, extra lines and such.
·         I need to cut out the “uhs” and “likes” because it shows I’m not sure what I’m going to say next.

Start:
·         I need to rehearse my lines aloud more often.
·         I need to start my speech by before coming to class leaving social drama at the door and not bringing it in with me.
·         I need to start rehearsing my lines in front of other peers to make sure I’m getting my message across.
·         I need to focus on where my interaction is happening, as in I need to make sure that next time I do a speech like this is really should explain where the elevator is located.
·         I need to start ironing my clothes before the speech to look more professional.
·         I should start drinking coffee beforehand to make sure my mental focus is at its peak in order to make less mistakes.
·         I need to start practicing the hand movements that I used, because after watching the speech I find myself doing gestures that don’t really align with what I’m saying.
·         I need to focus on my eye movement because in the video my eyes are wilding looking around the room.
·         I should focus on annunciating my words more because in the video I time and time again cringe at myself, because it’s hard to understand what I’m saying.
·         I also need to focus on keep my voice within a certain pitch and level, because it changes so much. However, it’s definitely a good start.
·         I need to start doing more research on my essay because I saw other people had very well constructed speeches do to statistics and research.
·         I need to start with more confidence, from the beginning because I noticed that once the ball was rolling I started doing better and better, but I need to do that from the beginning.

Continue:
·         I need to continue coming up with creative ideas because it think that creativity leads to and engaging and interesting topic.
·         I need to keep putting humor in my work because if you’re laughing it means you liked it.
·         I need to continue to talk loudly because that helps me engage the audience.
·         I need to continue to smile and appear okay with absolutely everything I say because if I think its right then so does the audience.
·         I need to continue to do hand gestures for the same reasons.
·         I need to continue to have confident body posture because it creates an illusion of control and importance.
·         I need to continue to move about the room, and if anything more so I used all space on the platform leaving no negative space, forcing myself to be the center of attention.
·         I need to continue to be unaffected by how the audience reacts to my material so that it still feels like an authentic private conversation.
·         I need to continue to have good timing in my speech although there is always room for improvement.

·         I need to continue to enjoy myself while I’m up there because when I’m having fun everything looks a lot better.

And when you want to go home to your mom, don't worry, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Now I know you have fame, money and probly a lot of strippers already. However lately you've been getting a bad rep with all of the drug lord drama. This is a new look for you. El Chapo, Baby, let me make you a star.
  • Introduction.
    1. Theorists grounded in behavioral science approach communication using the scientific method.
    2. Theorists grounded in the humanities approach communication through interpreting texts.
    3. Communication theories reflect a variety of methodological approaches, desired outcomes or goals, and levels of investigation.

  • Objective or interpretive: sorting out the labels.
    1. The objective approach and the interpretative approach to communication study differ in starting point, method, and conclusion.
    2. Scholars who do objective study are scientists.
    3. Scholars who do interpretive study are concerned with meaning and reflect a range of ideological and methodological positions. As a result, there is no single unifying or accepted label, although Griffin uses the term “interpretive scholars.”

  • Ways of knowing: discovering truth or creating multiple realities?
    1. Epistemology is the study of the nature of knowledge.
    2. Scientists assume that truth is singular.
      1. Reality is accessible through our senses.
      2. Collectively, scientists can understand the world.
      3. Good theories are mirrors of nature, true as long as conditions remain the same.
    3. Interpretive scholars also seek truth, but they are more tentative about the possibility of revealing objective reality.
      1. Truth is largely subjective; meaning is highly interpretive.
      2. The knower cannot be separated from the known.
      3. Multiple meanings are acceptable.
      4. Successful interpretations are those that convince others.

  • Human nature: determinism or free will.
    1. Determinists argue that heredity and environment determine behavior.
      1. Scientists favor this stance.
      2. They stress behavior shaped by forces beyond our control or individual awareness.
      3. Behavior is the response to a prior stimulus.
    2. Free will proponents maintain that human behavior is ultimately voluntary.
      1. Interpretive scholars endorse this position.
      2. They focus on conscious choices of individuals, not on why choices are made.
      3. They believe that significant decisions are value laden.
    3. As individual freedom increases, predictability of behavior decreases.

  • The highest value: objectivity or emancipation?
    1. Social scientists value objectivity; personal values should not distort human reality.
    2. Interpretive scholars seek to expand the range of free choice; knowledge is never neutral.
    3. Scientists seek effectiveness; interpreters focus on participation

  • The purpose of theory: universal laws or guides for interpretation?
    1. Scientists seek universal laws; interpreters strive to interpret individual texts.
    2. Scientists test theories; interpreters explore the web of meaning constituting human existence.
    3. Scientists seek prediction; interpretive scholars strive for meaning.

  • Objective or interpretive: Why is it important?
    1. You cannot fully understand a theory without knowing its assumptions about truth, human nature, the purpose of theory, and its values.
    2. It is helpful when thinking through theories to have a way of organizing them into objective and interpretive worldviews.
    3. Understanding objective and interpretive points can help you decide what direction to take your course work.
    4. Theorists in both camps believe their area of work will improve relationships and society.
    5. Plotting theories on an objective-interpretive scale: Objective and interpretive labels anchor end of a continuum, with many theories in between.
